Short Trips Volume 2 Doctor Who Short Trips Various 9781844355488 Books
Big Finish features eight more short audio stories with the first Eight Doctors:1963: A beautifully evocative story that has the Doctor returning Ian and Barbara to the day after they left only to find the world frozen, thus giving us a snapshot in time. Overall, this is a great character story from Barbara, and it's a great place for a snapshot as it comes right after the Kennedy assassination. William Russell turns in a solid performance and brings each character to life. The sound effects really make this a gorgeous story to listen to. 8/10
The Way Forward: This story's idea is a bit too big for the Short Trips format as this feels a bit rushed, if not possessing a certain whistfulness about it. David Troughton's reading does make the story worthwhile along with some very good sound effects. 6/10
Walls of Confinement: This is an interesting vignette from the period of Season 7 as the Doctor visits a zoo at the start of his captivity and finds himself sympathizing with a tiger. Overall, a very enjoyable and reflective tale. 7/10
Chain Reaction: This story is essentially the Doctor messing about to keep himself from boredom and making a discovery. It's inconsequential but written in a way that it'll holder the listener's attention for the relatively short running time. 6/10
Sock Pig: A widow stays in her house alone with her stuffed animal and appliances until the Doctor is coming. This is a quirky tale with a very sensitive twist that plays perfectly Peter Davison's kindly fifth Doctor. 7/10
The Doctor's Coat: The Doctor loses his iconic coat that contains the TARDIS key. Thanks to local customs, it's going to be a challenge for the Doctor to get it back. It's great to see how the Sixth Doctor negotiates the situation. I did think the philisophical bit in the TARDIS at the end seemed a little forced, but still this is a very charming and amusing tale. 7/10
Critical Mass: The Doctor and Ace arrive on a world at war as a Doomsday weapon is at risk of doing incalculable damage. Overall, this is an interesting story and stands out from the rest of the collection for how large scale the problem is. The solution is simple but not too simplistic and also with its thoughts on the morality of war feels like something that could have come out of the McCoy era. It's ambitious and mostly successful at telling a big short story that's fairly compelling. 7/10
Letting Go: This story has a fascinating premise. A young alien who died helping the Doctor and Charley save the day requests that they visit his family and deliver a message to his mother. This is an emotionally powerful idea for a story and it plays out beautifully. The family is well-drawn which makes the scenes in which the Doctor and Charley meet the family stand out and feel far more realistic. The story is helped by a very good performance by India Fisher who really gives each character life.
